Worthing
Our town is a great place to live. But did you know that:
- Worthing is the largest and most densely populated town in West Sussex.
- Worthing has the highest proportion of people aged 85 or over in all of England.
- Central and Heene are the two poorest wards in West Sussex.
- There are striking differences in life expectancy between the most deprived wards and the most affluent, such as Offington and Salvington.
The view of Worthing as a genteel retirement destination is now out-of-date. The town’s demographic is shifting as the proportion of older people decline against that of younger people and their families.
However, it is clear that the numbers of older people, and particularly those over 85, remain a very significant proportion of Worthing’s residents. The last Census in 2001 tells us there are around 22,500 people living in Worthing aged over 65 years of age, and 4,500 of them are over 85.
